DAREFest Edinburgh is a one day event organised by musicians Lou Mclean and Ashley Stein who met through their involvement in Girl’s Rock School Edinburgh. After becoming empowered through music they embraced the principles of making noise and taking up space to become more confident, capable and bad-ass; a skill set that they are eager to pass on to other women.
Taking place on Saturday 23rd September at The Wee Red Bar the event will feature a series of workshops which will focus on building up resilience and skills for both music performance & feminist activism.
- Feminist Pin Badge Making Station – Presented by the Speaking Out Project (Women’s Aid): Run by the amazing Speaking Out Project this badge making workshop brings the DIY aspect of any movement to DAREFest. Get involved and create your own empowering pins!
- DIY Tour Management – Presented by Ashley Stein: This workshop will cover in detail how to organise and promote a UK tour whether you’re in a band or are interested in becoming a booking agent.
- How to be a badass: verbal & emotional self-defence for women – Presented By Lou Mclean: This workshop will discuss different issues experienced by women in music and beyond, and how to address them with confidence.
“Having benefitted from the supportive, creative space which GRS have provided, we are hoping that this event will push it even further than just the music scene. We want to show women that they shouldn’t hold themselves back because of societal expectations of how we should act.” – Lou Mclean
DAREFest will take place on September 23rd from midday until 5pm with the gig following at 7.30pm. Both events will be held at The Wee Red Bar, 74 Lauriston Pl, Edinburgh EH3 9DF. Ticket prices vary and can be purchased through Eventbrite.
