The annual Kelburn Garden Party is back!
From 30th June – 3rd July, it takes place in the lush and historic grounds surrounding Kelburn Castle, near Largs (30mins from Glasgow, 90mins from Edinburgh), known around the world as the site of the Graffiti Project, an audacious plan that turned the historic 13th century castle into an international icon of street art.
Renowned for it’s diverse range of musical offerings and its stunning locations the festival features interactive art installations, living theatre, pop-up parties to glen walks, waterfall plunge pools, poetry, workshops, cabaret and downright surreal happenings…
This year, MOBO award-winning hip hop artist, writer, poet and educator Akala headlines alongside Mr. Scruff and the world-famous Hot 8 Brass Band. As well as internationally famous acts, the festival also features a range of UK talent. Among them are Be Charlotte, The Mouse Outfit, She Drew The Gun, Bombskare and an exclusive takeover from Numbers featuring the legendary Optimo. We spoke to Chris Knight, the music programmer for Kelburn, about this years festival:
What do you think makes Kelburn Garden Party such a unique event?
3 things I think come together to make Kelburn so unique – the site, comprising the glen, formal gardens and the various stages – it’s a totally unique space for a festival anywhere in the UK; the music programme is hugely diverse and represents a very large cross-section of exciting talent in Scotland, the UK and beyond; and the art and décor that goes into Kelburn is quite unique too, for example the Neverending Glen.
Who are you looking forward to seeing most at this years festival?
It’s a tough one of course – I am very intrigued to see what Akala is going to have to say about recent events, and being at such a historic place, and how he combined his music and message into a festival headline slot. 47soul and Flamingods I think are two very exciting names to watch for, and the Numbers takeover featuring Optimo and Jayda G should be totally banging!
For Kelburn first timers, what can they expect?
If you come to Kelburn with an open mind, you will have the time of your life – expect to make friends, have mind expanding interaction with new music and art, and probably to walk a fair bit around the amazing glen.
Pop-up free parties in the Neverending Glen, a giant UFO as a dance stage and over 120 acts playing this is one not to miss! Tickets are still available for this years Kelburn Garden Party. You can buy them here: www.kelburngardenparty.com/tickets/
