Lou, originally from Kircudbright in South West Scotland, won a competition to play The Famous Grouse House during EdFringe and tonight was the night! These places can be intimidating and the petite Lou was nervous about the performance, nothing to worry about though, performing seems to give her confidence. As the set went on her playing and chat got easier and she warmed to the occasion.
With quite a youthful and potentially fragile voice I wasn’t sure if Lou would hold her own ‘against’ a Friday night ‘Whisky Bar’ audience. Yes, it was noisy but she quickly let the music do the talking and with B.C. and All Talk (No Action) as her opening songs she got heads turning and even some lulls in the bar cacophony! These songs aren’t complex, with some straightforward chords it’s not the music that is the pull, it’s Lou’s lyrics. Both of these songs are self-penned, giving out a ‘message’ and showing prowess in story telling I think it’s Lou’s song writing that will help her along the way!
She occasionally adds some gusto to the songs and with one ‘punky’ number we hear the deeper, warmer tones of her voice sitting easily on top of the guitar. I think there will be more of this to come as her confidence, in herself and the songs, grows. Add to that a little of The Girls Rock School wit, something about a toastie, and the inner Lou appears! In a quieter environment the lyrical quality of the songs will pull us in better but tonight has been a great lesson for her and she more than held her own … thank you!
